A solid college going culture in high school is one of the greatest predictors of college enrollment. But cultivating a solid college-going culture requires more than simply hanging college pennants on the wall. Building a college going culture requires engaging students in conversation about college beginning day one of freshman year. Such a task can feel daunting to educators not trained on how to engage students or what information to give to students in high school to help them be successful in college. This is where Decoding College is different from the mountain of college guides available in most libraries and book stores. Decoding College is not JUST a college guide. Decoding College exposes students to an array of academic, social and non cognitive skills they need to master in high school to be successful in college. Because of this, Decoding College fits perfectly as a supplemental text in a range of core and elective courses.
Talk to your school about ordering a grade-level set or class set of Decoding College before senior year. If your school orders a class set (25+) I am happy to provide a set of classroom lesson-plans for in-class use. If your school orders a grade-level set (60+) I am happy to provide an audio version of the book for in class use (great for morning or afternoon advisory).
Email Kallie Clark at kalliec@uchicago.edu to request lesson plans or an audio book.
